Intern Perspective

​Hello, my name is Terryn. I am a Sodexo/URI MSDI Intern, based on Long Island, NY.  I’m 3 months into the internship. Thus far, I have completed the patient services rotation. Throughout the rotation, I had the opportunity to interact with patients and engage in conversations regarding their hospital experience. By collaborating with the clinical nutrition manager, I successfully resolved patients' concerns, resulting in favorable outcomes.
 
Presently, I am in the advanced stage of my clinical rotation. This has been a challenging, yet exciting experience. During this rotation, I evaluate patients, provide medical nutrition therapy, and conduct Nutrition Focused Physical Exams. When formulating PES statements and providing recommendations for patients, I utilize critical thinking skills and apply clinical judgment to come to the most optimal decision for the patients.
 
While I am currently in my clinical rotation, I have the option to fulfill a portion of my community choice hours. I have actively participated in multiple health fairs, where I was involved in discussions with firefighters, law enforcement, as well as individuals from the Latin and Haitian communities at a nearby educational institution. The focus was on diabetes prevention and management. In honor of National Registered Dietitians Day, the nutrition department organized a table in the atrium, where I worked with the diabetes educator providing nutrition education to hospital staff members and visitors. Additionally, I had the advantage of collaborating with the registered dietitian at the dialysis center.
 
I am grateful to be assigned to my current site for the clinical, long-term care, and food service rotations since it allows me to gain valuable experience. It is a pleasure to work with the registered dietitians, clinical nutrition manager, and food service director.  They demonstrate thoughtfulness, patience, and extensive knowledge, making them exceptional preceptors. Overall, I am enjoying the Sodexo experience.
