Hello! My name is Joni Trotter, and I am a dietetic intern in the NC area from Region 6. Currently, I am in the middle of my first rotation learning Food Service Management (FSM). I will be completing not only my FSM, but also my Patient Services, Clinical Nutrition Management, and Clinical rotations all in the same hospital. I really like the idea of getting to know my way around, meeting different members of the staff, and gaining an overall general feel for my surroundings there before diving into my clinical rotation. Although the location is an hour drive from my home, I have quickly adjusted to using my drive time to gather my thoughts, enjoy some coffee, and get myself centered and focused on the projects and experiences that will be a part of my busy day!

I am not sure if I was more nervous or excited to start my first rotation, but everyone I have met so far is so incredibly friendly and encouraging! I have learned so much already in the three weeks I have been in food service. I have had the opportunity to assist in several catering events provided by the hospital at both on and offsite locations. It has given me a chance to see for myself how this small community interacts with and cares about one another. I carry these experiences with me as I interact with the patients discussing their daily menus and meal delivery. My preceptors are kind enough to make ALL my questions seem normal and open to hearing my concerns, ideas, and input on how to help improve their overall performance through my projects and interviews. I am looking forward to putting my Retail and Wellness project into action next week! Time has flown and I will soon be starting my clinical rotation which gives me butterflies, but I know Sodexo has provided me with the best background and hands-on orientation to help me soar through it.

For those about to begin their internship adventure, I truly encourage you to go into this whole experience open-minded. Ask as many questions as need be! Establish a routine and seriously “do something every day” to stay on top of your projects. I promise it will calm your insecurities and make you more confident and focused. Don’t forget to take some time for you each week. You have worked so hard for this opportunity and remember YOU are worthy and deserve to be there!
