Hi, my name is Tetyana, and I am an intern from Sodexo’s New York Campus. My primary site is St. Michael Medical Center in Newark, NJ. I enjoy being at this place and communicating daily with pleasant people around me. Right now I am doing my MNT rotation and greatly appreciating every minute of it while getting valuable experience in different areas of nutrition. I already completed one week at the Bariatric Clinic and developed skills in counseling patients about proper diet plans before and after their surgery and motivating them toward a healthier lifestyle. Looking ahead I will work on diabetes and hypertension education to prevent readmissions to the hospital, and I will continue with inpatient services.
Currently, I am getting more experience at the outpatient Cancer Center with one of my excellent dietitians. During my Intermediate Clinical rotation, I already had an opportunity to spend three days at this center. However, I wanted to get more experience in this area because one of my long-term goals is to become a Certified Oncology Dietitian. My CNM was very helpful to set up more time for me at this center, and I am very thankful for this opportunity.
The oncology patients are very different from each other and from other patients. Many of them are looking for a registered dietitian to get nutritional advice, and they are so ready to make necessary lifestyle changes. Some of them are not open at the beginning and need time to overcome depression and feel more comfortable at the center. It is amazing to observe a dietitian’s patience and her ability talent to engage them in a discussion. Also, it is so impressive to hear from patients how helpful she was and how they are grateful to have her there. They not only do they need nutritional recommendations, very often they need moral support as well, and the ability to cover all of it is the way of becoming a successful dietitian.
I am looking forward to learning more from all of my wonderful preceptors and get more experience during my MNT rotation. I cannot stress enough how thankful I am to the Sodexo Dietetic Internships for providing me with all of the different experiences on my way to becoming an RD.
