When I first started the internship, I thought I would love the clinical rotation and that would be where I ended up. However, being able to experience so many areas has really opened my eyes and taught me that I enjoy being involved in areas I never thought I would. Through my internship, I have worked in acute care, outpatient, community, and with a variety of populations such as elderly, children, diabetics, and young adults. The flexibility of this internship is something that is important to me, because it allows me to experience a variety of areas and accommodates my personal needs. I am working a part-time job while completing the internship, and I am very thankful to have the opportunity to do both at the same time.
The community rotation gives me even more flexibility, because I can complete some of those hours during other rotations as opportunities come my way. During a community event for Garlic Fest through Shoprite of Bethlehem, I helped with a cooking demo to provide the audience with nutrition education. We compared products that the common public might use to products they may not be aware of but are a healthier option. We provided samples of the dish we made and gave out the recipe so everyone could make it at home. Then, we provided answers to questions they had about nutrition and how to live a healthy lifestyle. This was a great way to educate a large group of people, and I love being able to interact directly with the community.
Working with so many different groups gives you the skills to be able to change your type of communication based on the group you are trying to reach. Everyone learns differently and knowing the most effective ways to communicate with each population is very important!
During the last couple weeks of my internship, I will also be able to experience a couple days in a weight management outpatient setting. I am really looking forward to seeing what that brings!
