Hi everyone! This is Sydney, reporting to you from Orlando, Florida. Being in the distance cohort, I have been able to complete rotations in two different states. My clinicals were completed down in Naples Florida, and then I traveled back up to Baltimore, Maryland for my foodservice rotation at the National Aquarium. The plan was to stay in Maryland for the rest of my internship, but then I was presented with the opportunity to complete my wellness rotation at Disney World...

When I say my concentration is wellness, I am often asked, “What exactly does wellness mean?” There is no exact answer to this question which makes it a fun area to explore. I have been working with the dietitian whose role is wellness/marketing director for SodexoMagic at Walt Disney World Resort. Currently, there is a pilot employee wellness program for the cast members at one of the parks. Since nutrition plays an important role in wellness, strategic marketing of the delicious and healthy menu items is very important. I have learned the significance of marketing when getting customers to buy into an employee wellness program. For example, creating eye-catching handouts or strategically placing a wellness fair in the employee break room.

PictureUpper management support for the wellness program is an important stake in a successful wellness program. We provided a tasting of the new healthy menu items at the end of a departmental meeting to stir up excitement and increase exposure.
The support from Disney (the client) is pivotal in being able to offer a discounted cost for healthy menu items. This employee wellness program can be successful due to its support from the upper management, who care about the health and well-being of their employees. It has been interesting to watch the relationship between my preceptor and the Wellness Team at Disney. They are consistently working together for one goal: to promote wellness and improve the health of the employees.

With only a few weeks left in my internship, I look back on all the different areas I got to explore and the amazing preceptors who guided me through my journey. Take the opportunities presented to you or go seek out meaningful ones; whether small or big, there is always something you can learn from it.

Finishing up my internship with this wellness rotation has been just magical!
