Did you know that Americans spend $40 billion a year on weight-loss programs and products? A good chunk of this money goes into “investing” in the newest diets out there. As future RDNs, we should keep ourselves updated on the latest and greatest. Thus, I leave you with five popular diets that have gained traction over the past decade and that you should know about.

Ideal Protein Diet
This is a diet that focuses on weight loss and achieving a healthier lifestyle. The diet has gained a slew of followers more recently, but was originally developed over 20 years ago by Dr. Tran Tien Chanh, who believes insulin dysfunction is the cause of weight issues of modern society. The diet encourages the body to burn its fat reserves and support muscle mass reserves by eating foods with high quality protein.

I Quit Sugar Diet
This is an 8-week program designed by Sarah Wilson, an Australian journalist, television presenter, blogger, media consultant and author of the book. The diet encourages dieters to cut all sugar, including fruits, to give the body a break and allow it to recalibrate. Dieters can start reintroducing low-fructose fruits 4 weeks into the diet and are encouraged to follow a sensible eating pattern thereafter.

The Nordic Diet
Similar to the Mediterranean Diet, the Nordic Diet, originally published in 2009, has been found to lower cholesterol and decrease inflammation; decreasing the risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. The diet emphasizes eating local produce, lots of nuts, poultry, fish, whole grains, canola oil for cooking, low-fat dairy, and no sugar-sweetened drinks.

F-Factor Diet
Created by the go to NYC RDN Tanya Zuckerbrot 10 years ago, but still very popular today, this diet promises to help with weight loss, but without feeling hungry. It focuses on what foods to add into your diet, rather than what to eliminate from it. The “secret” to this diet is the addition of fiber, which is achieved by eating high whole and fresh carbohydrates over refined versions.

The Flexitarian Diet
This is a flexible vegetarian diet created by RDN Dawn Jackson Blatner who recently won ABC’s My Diet Is Better Than Yours show. The premise of this diet is that eating vegetarian most of the time will help with weight loss and help in preventing heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.
