Stephanie Keyte - Distance Option

10/6/2017

One aspect of wellness nutrition is prevention, and a strategy that is often recommended to help clients mitigate their risk of disease is an anti-inflammatory diet.

As part of a program called Nourish, my long term care preceptor regularly gives talks to her independent living residents about various aspects of nutrition. I had the opportunity to research, develop, and deliver one of these presentations as part of my community rotation. The topic? Chronic Inflammation and the Anti-Inflammatory Diet.

I began with a basic introduction to the concept of inflammation before moving into the specifics about which foods to limit, which foods to eat more of, and why. Because there are many eating plans and diets that can be considered anti-inflammatory, my focus was on the recommendations that can be found in most.

As the presentation came to a close, residents sampled an anti-inflammatory Mediterranean Chickpea Salad (made from many of the foods that are considered anti-inflammatory). We addressed individual questions and concerns before sending the group away with a recipe for the salad, as well as the following handout that I developed as a take-home reference.

The whole experience was rewarding, and a lot of fun!
