Hi fellow interns! I have spent the last three months at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan NY. We are a very busy hospital with a large population of patients who have elective bariatric surgeries. During my basic clinical rotation I mentioned to my preceptor that I would like to observe a surgery. Since I was in my GI rotation she thought it would be appropriate for me to see a bariatric surgery. Luckily we are also a large teaching hospital and the doctor was more than willing to let students observe. Myself and another dietetic intern from the Northwell Health internship scrubbed in and observed an entire laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Once the doctor removed part of the patients stomach and removed it from her body, he allowed us to hold the stomach! It was fascinating to feel the difference in the muscular structure at the proximal vs distal ends of the stomach. It was an experience I won't soon forget. Take advantage of all opportunities offered, you won't regret it!
