How does one choose a healthy granola, protein, or snack bar? Many store-bought options are nearly indistinguishable from candy bars, but fear not! Choosing a nutrient dense bar is easy with a little evidence-based knowledge on our side. Use these rules of thumb when you find yourself in a pinch and need on-the-go, quick nutrition:

1. Look for single digit, naturally occurring sugar listed on the nutrition facts label (the lower the better!) It's no secret that many bars are comparable to candy bars in sugar content and empty calories.

2. Look for high fiber (Can you shoot for 5 grams?) Fiber slows the release of glucose into the bloodstream, helps keep you satiated, and provides excellent nourishment for your friendly gut bacteria.

3. Do you recognize the ingredients listed on the label? If so, you're on the right track.

4. Look for reputable brand name protein bars to minimize the risk of protein 'fillers.'

5. Applicable to all bar types: Don't fall for marketing gimmicks! "Paleo, superfood, gluten-free, keto, made-for-women" are trendy words, not magical or even ideal for everyone. When in doubt, refer to tips 1-4!
