Social media isn’t the future – it’s the present! And it’s one of the most effective tools for future dietitians today. Throughout the internship, various projects and assignments have required me to utilize social media and branding. Here are the apps and programs to know and use:

Canva – free; $12.95 per month for upgraded version
I’ve used this program for so many projects and presentations! It’s easy to use, it’s creative, and it creates eye-catching flyers and posters. The program can be used for just about anything, including social media posts. You can even invite people to collaborate! The program is free, but certain features have an additional cost unless you have a membership.

Wordswag – free on Apple app store or Google play
This is a must use app for anyone utilizing social media. Wordswag allows you to put text on pictures, but not just your basic Times New Roman! There are over 50 fonts to choose from – plus, the app will crop your photo depending on which platform you plan to use the picture for. Instagram story? Facebook header? No problem.

PictureI used VSCO to edit this picture from my Retail Marketing and Wellness Project! I also used Canva to create the poster and info sheets.
VSCO – free on Apple app store or Google play; $20 a year for membership
There are a lot of photo editing apps out there but my personal favorite is VSCO. The free version includes many of their most popular filters, but I think its 100% worth it to upgrade to the membership. That’s because you then get the option to edit your videos! Have you ever had a presentation filmed then realized it was way too dark? Or could be clearer? You can fix that on VSCO, and then some. The membership also comes with many more filters, which can be a little daunting. Play around until you find the one that its best for you, or create your own with their additional settings.

Calendly – free; $8 per month for premium
Have you gone through email tag trying to schedule a time to meet a preceptor? It can be tough – things can be missed in translation, or someone forgets to reply. I’ve switched over to now using Calendly anytime I need to schedule something important. You create a calendar with your availability, then you send the link for your person to pick a time! The free version only allows one calendar and one link, but the premium lets you create multiple calendars for different scheduling events.

Using even just one of these apps or programs will help you to become an effective, influential dietitian. Remember social media is our friend – let’s use it to our advantage!
