Declutter Your Diet: Finding Happiness in a Balanced Diet

Decluttering your diet is a simple way to start living a healthier lifestyle. Clean eating is all about eating more of the healthier options in the 5 main food groups: vegetables, fruits, meats and poultry, dairy, and whole grains. Decluttering your diet is not about counting calories; it is simply about embracing whole food in its natural form and eating less of the refined grains, products with added sugars and unhealthy fats, processed meats, and packaged foods. It is easy to do and can be fun!
 
As a Sodexo Intern, I am involved with the food service industry. Through my pediatric concentration, I had the opportunity to be involved with the food service staff at Alfred and Nemour’s Children Hospital in DuPont, Delaware. During the month of March, the staff wanted to amplify National Nutrition Month. What better way to promote nutrition than having a healthy cooking demo? My topic of interest was “Declutter your Diet” and the recipe I chose to make was a spaghetti squash marinara. The recipe, a hand-out on clean eating, and samples were available to employees as well as patients and their families during lunch hours.

Employees and patients came across my table with a question mark written on their faces. All I had to say was “free samples!” for them to come quickly to my table. Once explaining how easy the recipe was to prepare and cook, I then went into detail about my topic and discussed tips on clean eating. The tips included: buying foods locally, simple ways to cook at home, how to avoid processed/packaged foods, and how to be mindful when hungry.
 
I enjoyed interacting with the food service staff, the dietitians, and the patient’s and their families. I appreciate the experiences and opportunities that are provided to me as a Sodexo Intern and I am looking forward to my future in the dietetic field.
