As part of a wellness and weight-loss program called Core4, an outpatient RD (registered dietitian), Katie Campbell, gives lectures to the public at NYP-Lawrence Hospital about various nutrition topics to promote weight-loss. The 11-week program consists of lectures held every week, a one-on-one counseling session with the RD, a metabolic reading, and lastly, a free fitness evaluation with a certified personal trainer. Each week Katie teaches a new topic such as behavior modification, portion control, food labels, meal planning, physical activity, and so much more!
For my wellness concentration, I had the pleasure of attending one of the classes. The class I attended was on food labels, meal planning, and dining out. The RD displayed a PowerPoint presentation and handed out educational material. The topics were taught in such an easy-to-understand manner, which is very important to promote behavior change. Between Katie being a great presenter, and everyone being super receptive and interested in the topics, it made for a genuinely fun class.
Core4 is such a great wellness program for the public and hope more people join in the future. Attending this lecture gave me an insight and appreciation to what an outpatient RD does. I hope to continue attending these lectures to see the progress in the participants, learn more about different topics for wellness and weight-loss, and learn more about the outpatient RD role.
