Olivia Schmith - Baltimore/Washington DC Campus

3/14/2018

Being a Sodexo Dietetic Intern has allowed me to experience an array of future career opportunities and fun learning experiences. The Baltimore/Washington D.C. Campus internship has been very eye opening. I have taken classes at a variety of medical facilities across the region including George Washington, Johns Hopkins, UMMC, and many others. Our class was lucky enough to even meet legislators in Annapolis and discuss public policy relating to Dietetics. Overall, my internship thus far has provided my classmates and I with an in depth  look at Dietetics and the role of the RD across all sectors.

Since it is March, I am in the middle of celebrating National Nutrition Month at my clinical site, Shady Grove Medical Center in Rockville, MD. I have a fun month planned full of interactive activities and healthy cafeteria specials for Employees and Visitors alike to enjoy. For the first week of National Nutrition Month, I took part in the Adventist Behavioral Health Skills Fair. During this skills fair, I taught RNs, secretary’s, and technician’s about the different diets that we offer at the facility and appropriate food items and textures  associated with these diets. It was great to have one-on-one time with the employees and this opportunity allowed them to ask any questions they had regarding Dietary Services and Nutrition. I truly enjoyed sharing my knowledge with employees and also gaining some insight on their day-to-day responsibilities. I look forward to sharing more nutrition information with employees throughout the rest of March and the rest of my time at my clinical site.
