Hello! My name is Nicole Sohayegh, a dietetic intern at the New York campus and I started my Wellness rotation in November at an integrative nutrition private practice called My Ingredients For Health on Long Island. I LOVE anything and everything about food! The most wonderful thing about food though, is using it to heal our bodies. Finally, medicine that can taste good :) I truly believe that food can be a source of medicine, and that’s exactly what I learned during my wellness rotation.
It was such a wonderful experience working with a dietitian who has such a range of knowledge; something that I hope to one day incorporate into my own practice. I was challenged daily to look at how our diet, specific nutrients, and herbs can help individuals suffering from chronic issues, such as increased intestinal permeability (leaky guy), return to their optional health. I was able to see how dietetics can directly impact a persons quality of life, which made me feel so incredibly lucky to have found my passion in a field that can make a difference in a person’s life. I love working with individuals one on one, and learning different techniques of nutrition counseling that can best facilitate change for each individual. I was never bored because each patient was truly different! From children who were picky eaters, to CKD, each day brought new puzzles to put together. I was also able to meet with a representative from Integrative Therapeutics, a company that uses pharmaceutical grade nutrients and herbs for supplements, to learn about new research regarding Curcumin. It was fascinating!
Something special that I accomplished while at my wellness rotation was doing a Facebook Live for my cooking demo. Boy was I nervous! I had to do a few practice shoots before the real ones, but ended up having a ton of fun making a healthy take on pumpkin pie. And it wasn’t too bad eating it after either :) I feel so grateful that Sodexo offered this concentration, it truly was a one of a kind experience that has landed me one step closer to my career goals. I look forward to many more throughout my internship!
