Hello everyone! My name is Michelle Love and I am an intern through Sodexo’s Allentown campus in Pennsylvania. I am currently in my Wellness rotation at The College of New Jersey and will soon be in my Food Systems Management rotation by the end of this month. My wellness rotation has taught me so much about general wellness for students’ health in addition to some food service aspects.
I started this rotation at the end of March and there were several events that featured the smoothie bike. I had heard about this bike before I began my internship, so I was excited to try it out the first day of my wellness rotation. The smoothie bike helps participants be mindful of the benefits that eating right, and physical activity can have on the body. This time of year especially, the students are stressing out with finals so we have been promoting mood boosting foods in smoothies and even salads. An additional wellness event featured a refreshing strawberry salad with a sweet and savory dark chocolate balsamic vinaigrette.
The blueberries in this featured smoothie are filled with antioxidants to help fight against inflammation that can occur to the body under times of stress. The bananas are filled with potassium and healthy sugars to help the brain feel charged and focused for a longer period of time when hunger is no longer a factor. Yogurt contains carbs and protein to help students feel full for an extended period of time and also helps give the smoothie a nice smooth texture.
It is so rewarding to see students get excited over riding the smoothie bike while also teaching them useful tips related to hydration, physical activity, and mindfulness while eating to fuel the body for success.
