Melissa Grande - Philadelphia Campus

Hi! My name is Melissa Grande and I am a Sodexo dietetic intern with the Philadelphia campus.  I am currently in my “concentration” rotation (medical nutrition therapy) at Doylestown Hospital.  During my clinical time at Doylestown, I was given the opportunity to participate in a few community events including running the health fair booth for the Nutrition Department, which is open to employees and the public.

The dietitians on staff are passionate about continuously educating fellow staff members and those in the community of the most current nutrition research and also debunking some common nutrition myths. At our booth we had handouts, a delicious kale salad sample and a quiz that employees could take to test their nutrition knowledge for entry into a raffle .

This experience gave me the opportunity to engage with co-workers in a more casual, relaxed environment, which resulted in  their ability to not be afraid of questioning their current knowledge.  Through these interactions, I was surprised to learn of the many different avenues in which people acquire their beliefs about nutrition.

Overall, I was glad to hang up my clinical hat for the day and delve into the minds of my co-workers and the public in order to better understand the current health climate.  In the end, we were able to learn from each other and come away with a better understanding of successful strides forward as well as areas for development in community nutrition.
