Hi all! It’s Marissa.  Hope all your rotations are going smoothly, but if you’re like me, you’ve noticed that your bank account and your free time have taken a serious hit.  Juggling hours, competencies, and personal life makes it even more difficult than ever to stay healthy and active. One of the ongoing projects at my hospital is a newly formed partnership with the American Heart Association.  It has inspired a menu overhaul for my hospital.  Fish has become available most days in our cafeteria, the salad bar is impressive and Mindful by Sodexo dishes have a larger presence on the menu.  Our hospital also offers a free rooftop bootcamp class for its employees.  This got me thinking of other ways to get a workout in on a budget.  The following are some ideas:

  1. Indoor exercises: Taking the stairs with your preceptors like I do now, religiously.  (Elevator? What’s that?  Never heard of it.)
  2. Hit up a donation-only yoga class.  There are tons of these popping up everywhere.  Find out if there is one near you.
  3. Make your own gym at home.  You can find second hand workout equipment from places like Goodwill or Freecycle.com.  Just stream workout videos online.  It’s even more convenient than going to the gym.
  4. Volunteer with a local park or farm for a win-win.  It’s a workout and great for community outreach. My gym partners with a lo’i, which is a taro farm, and one Saturday a month, we get out in the fields and harvest taro.
  5. Typical stuff: walking, running, hiking, swimming.  You know the drill.

Those are just a few.  Hope that helps a little.  Have a great week!
