As a Sodexo dietetic intern, I am exceptionally busy and often find myself putting my own health on the back burner while learning how to improve the health and quality of life of others. If you are a fellow dietetic intern, I am positive you can relate. As soon as we fall into a routine, we are pulled out of our comfort zone to begin something new. It’s extremely challenging, yet exciting and rewarding.

Recently, I finished my clinical rotations in Texas (yay!). Now, I am back home in Colorado and the bustle of beginning my Food Service Management Rotation has me wondering if I will ever get back into a normal routine. During my first shift at Kent Denver School, I was asked to help with the “fruit waters.” My first thought - what are fruit waters? My second thought – wow, I have not had any water yet today!

So, I realized two things on my first day at Kent Denver School. One was the fantastically simple benefits of infused water. Infused water is not a new concept, but I had yet to see it incorporated into school lunches. The kitchen staff adds various fruit combinations to large water dispensers, which are placed in the cafeteria each day. The result is deliciously flavored and aesthetically pleasing beverage both the students and staff love. Keep this in mind during your own Food Service Management Rotation. It could be something you can recommend to spruce-up the cafeteria! Some flavors to try are orange, orange-pear, and orange-lemon (pictured above, left to right). Other popular flavors include lemon-lime, grapefruit, and citrus-mint.

Secondly, I realized that although we strive to instill healthy habits into patients, clients, and the community, we sometimes dismiss our own health. Of course, it’s okay to skip a workout or two, or forget to stay hydrated on a super busy day. However, it’s important that we don’t allow these mishaps to become unhealthy habits despite our busy schedules. Don’t forget – your health comes first!
