Mahir Mikhaeel - Distance Option

Hello everyone! My name is Mahir Mikhaeel, and I’m a Sodexo dietetic intern in the distance cohort living in Los Angeles. I’m currently in my intermediate clinical rotation and getting ready to move up to advanced clinical rotation at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center. I told my clinical nutrition manager that all the hard work through undergrad, other rotations, and grad school are finally worth it once I started my clinical rotation. I’m glad I chose to do my concentration in medical nutrition therapy because I really enjoy working with patients in a hospital setting. This extra time at the hospital will allow me to gain more in-depth hands on experience, especially in critical care, which I think is fascinating.
Since it’s national nutrition month, my preceptor asked me to plan a nutrition table/booth in the cafeteria during lunch hours. The audience would be hospital employees and patients’ visitors. I planned the activities about fiber and developed a brochure “All You Need to Know About Dietary Fiber” to hand out at the booth. The brochure covered materials about health benefits of fiber, types of fiber, how much fiber to consume, and tips for fitting in more fiber. To attract more people to come to the booth, I had snacks to give out, which were hummus with whole-wheat pita bread. I also came up with a question for the audience to answer and enter a raffle to get a chance to win a free meal ticket at the cafeteria.
During my time at the booth, I had positive interactions with the hospital staff and the visitors, as they were very curious to learn more about fiber. This experience allowed me to provide nutrition education in a short period of time while people were trying the samples, and refer them to read the brochure for more in-depth information.
