Hello!  My name is Lavender Oyadomari.  I am a Sodexo dietetic intern living in the sunny aloha state, Hawai’i.  I am currently completing my clinical rotation at Pali Momi Medical Center, and I cannot wait to tell you about my experiences so far!

In celebration of National Nutrition Month, I collaborated with one of the RDs to put on a series of events for hospital employees.  Dietitians commonly tell clients that incorporating fresh or dried herbs into meals is a delicious way reduce sodium in their diets without sacrificing flavor.  I put my event planning skills to use and created an interactive event for employees to learn both how to incorporate herbs into their cooking and how to grow their own herbs at home.  Not only is cooking with home grown herbs healthy and delicious, but it is also a sustainable practice that will save you money on expensive herbs from the grocery store!  Employees were excited to get their hands dirty and walked away with an “herb baby” to nurture at home.

Truthfully, planning these events was an intimidating project and I am so thankful that everything went as planned.  However, what I didn’t expect was how much joy it would bring me to work with these hospital employees!  Throughout my clinical experience, I have observed the genuine and unwavering dedication these hospital employees have in caring for their patients.  Regardless of how busy the hospital is, how tired they are, or whatever is happening in their personal lives, nothing stops these hospital employees from providing exceptional patient care through their own specialties.  Whether they are from radiology, speech therapy, housekeeping, or nursing, they do their work with smiles on their faces!

Caring for sick patients and supporting them and their families through difficult times takes a special person, and I truly believe the hospital staff members need and deserve to have someone supporting them as well.  Prior to starting my internship, corporate wellness was simply one of my many interests.  My experiences thus far have given me confidence that this is the right field for me.  If you have watched the Netflix series “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” you might ask me, “Does this spark joy?”  My answer is, “Absolutely!”
