Hey, y'all! My name is Laura Brooks, and I am located in Houston, Texas. In about one week, I will be done with my food service rotation at HCA Houston Healthcare West. Beginning with the food service rotation has been a wonderful opportunity because I have been able to learn exactly how the food is sourced, prepared, and distributed to patients within the hospital. This will all be extremely valuable information as I enter my clinical rotation at the same location.
At the beginning of my food service rotation, I thought I was going to be treated as an extra pair of hands and put to work wherever the kitchen was short-staffed. However, the internship assignments prevented this from happening and actually allowed me to implement changes at the hospital cafe to further customer satisfaction with a nutrition-focused component.
After completing the sustainability assessment, I learned about Bite, which is a Sodexo app used by facilities to market their menus along with nutrition information. A valuable feature of this app is the customer survey associated with each menu item. The ease, simplicity, and ability to answer on the go with the app allowed me to start collecting food reviews from busy hospital employees. Also, I was able to educate customers on the nutrition of their daily breakfast and lunch by directing them to the nutrition info linked to each food item on the app. Bite is a demonstration of Sodexo’s innovative drive and desire to constantly improve. I am thankful my time during the food service rotation was spent helping HCA Houston Healthcare West utilize Bite to its fullest potential in order to drive sales, review customer desired changes, and initiate conversation on nutrition.
