Hi! My name is Kristin and I am a Sodexo dietetic intern in the Philadelphia Area. I am currently completing part of my wellness concentration with a corporate wellness company based in Center City. The experience has been very unique, and is completely different from the clinical setting.
I’ve learned that corporate wellness goes far beyond nutrition and seeks to improve the well-being of employees through a more holistic approach. Areas of concern include stress management, smoking cessation, and this company even offers acupuncture! Still, nutrition is a key component to wellness and is incorporated into many of the seminars and presentations put on by the company.
In corporate wellness, it is so important to put the client’s needs first. This can be challenging because each client is very different. As a result, research into trends, needs, and preferences surrounding corporations is critical. This also means that what worked or was popular in previous years, may not be as effective later on.
Dietitians in corporate wellness definitely need an understanding of dietary recommendations for numerous conditions since they are working with such a complex population. Additionally, people skills, communication abilities, organization, and creativity are essential for satisfying the client every single time!
The corporate wellness dietitian certainly has a fast-paced, high-energy role to play. They get the opportunity to wear many hats and practice in a variety of settings. This is very appealing to me, and likely is the case for anyone who enjoys having their hands in several different pots!
