Hi! My name is Jackie Philbin and I’m a Sodexo New Bedford intern. I’ve had the great opportunity to complete some of my community rotations back in my home state of New Jersey. While grocery shopping during a weekend home, I noticed my supermarket had a retail Registered Dietitian on staff. The Shoprite chain has provided their customers with the complimentary services of a registered dietitian for over 10 years! I was able to secure a rotation with her and it was hands down, a fantastic experience. During my rotation, I not only observed my preceptor counsel clients one-on-one, but also witnessed her integral role in the community. She held weekly diabetes management support groups, conducted in-store food demos and samplings, and provided diet education to local schools. I was able to help create a handout for a girl scout troop’s upcoming visit for their badge, “Eating for Beauty” and we taught a preschool class about whole-grains. We also made healthy whole-grain snacks. My preceptor is pioneering a wellness program called, “Eat Well. Live Well. Lincoln Park” which collaborates with local restaurants and offers menu items that are in accordance with the American Heart Association’s Heart-Check standards. I was able to attend one of their monthly meetings; the experience opened my eyes and showed how much community involvement a retail dietitian has! I plan on returning for another week long rotation and recommend that other interested interns secure a rotation with a supermarket RD! |
