Hey y’all! My name is Holly Moye and I am a Sodexo dietetic intern out of San Diego, CA (Region 12). What an awesome experience the internship has been so far completing my food service management and community rotations!

I have most recently completed my community rotation, where I had several different amazing experiences. I have had the opportunity to intern at community health centers, with a bariatric dietitian, in a gym, school cafeterias, long term care facilities, and at the Naval Medical Hospital.

My biggest piece of advice is to reach out to anyone who you are curious to learn from or can offer value to – whether that is an RD, a health center, a bariatric dietitian, or even a gym! You will never have the opportunity to be involved in so many different settings as easily as you will be able to as an intern, and you will learn so much from the variety of settings.

One of my favorite experiences so far was teaching a class at the Naval Medical Hospital in San Diego to active duty veterans about nutrition for fitness. I taught them the importance of each macronutrient and how it relates to workouts. We spent the second half of the class making my favorite recipes – protein muffins, energy balls, and a green smoothie. I was able to have this experience because I found a local RDs contact information on the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) website and decided to email her. Because I enjoyed my experience so much, I ended up spending more than half of my community hours with her! This experience alone taught me to not be afraid to reach out, even if you do not get an immediate response. She was able to teach me about adolescent malnutrition/eating disorders, how to get started with a private practice, and gave me many useful resources I foresee using in my career.

I am so grateful for all of the diverse opportunities and populations I have been able to work with. I have acquired a very multifaceted experience through the internship that fuels my optimism and confidence going into my clinical rotation. Thank you, Sodexo, for giving me the opportunity to gain so much experience and enjoy it at the same time!
