Hello all!  My name is Hayley MacLean and I am a Sodexo distance intern from Seattle, WA. I just completed my food service management rotation at Nintendo of America, which, as you can imagine, was an absolute blast.  From getting to test out my personally-created smoothie recipes on the hungry, happy employees to hosting children’s gaming camps in Mario Café, my time during my FSM rotation is something that I will never forget.  During this rotation, I grew from being unsure in a new kitchen to having confidence in my management and leadership abilities.  Becoming a part of their fantastic kitchen team taught me skills I will continue to use throughout my career.

I have so enjoyed my time in my internship so far, and the aspect I appreciate the most about it is the ability to create my own unique adventure.  Having always wanted the ability to travel while working, Sodexo is giving me the opportunity to not only gain experience in my home town, but also completely across the country in Boston and even overseas in Indonesia through this internship!  Getting to work in a variety of situations and bring my love of nutrition to people from all walks of life is truly what draws me to this field and I am getting to live out my dreams in this way.

One of my favorite experiences I have had so far is being able to volunteer at the downtown Seattle YMCA, providing nutrition knowledge and counseling to the members of the facility as part of my community rotation.  Being in such a diverse city and working for an organization that promotes equality for all, I have been able to work with many different types of people, each with their own story.  I believe that food has the ability to heal the body, enlighten the mind, and bring people together, and being able to share this in such a public forum has had a huge impact on the way I view nutrition as a whole.

I have learned that it is so important to remember to meet each person that you work with exactly where they are currently at, meaning that sometimes I have to stop myself from pushing too hard due to my way to help.  At the YMCA, I have people come to me who have prior knowledge of nutrition concepts and those who have never even heard of the food groups, so making sure to work from their position is so important to their understanding and future health and success.

This are just a few examples of the breadth of experiences gained through the Sodexo dietetic internship, and I look forward to being able to continue growing as a nutrition professional through my future internship endeavors.  To future interns: remember this time is for you to learn and discover exactly where you want to be in this field - so keep your mind open and make it uniquely yours!
