Hi everyone it’s me again, Gina Coleman, intern with Sodexo Dietetic Internships’ Philadelphia campus. Since my last post I have been enjoying the past few weeks in my wellness concentration. I have been interning at Vanguard with a corporate wellness dietitian and a private practice dietitian in the Ambler, PA area. The two opportunities fit my interests in exactly what I want to do with nutrition after becoming a dietitian.

At Vanguard, I was able to create monthly handouts for wellness tables for each month of the year. I learned how to design flyers, posters, social media advertisements, and create marketing campaigns using graphic design and marketing websites. The dietitian taught me a lot of useful tools for creating wellness program information and how corporate wellness works. During my time at Vanguard, I was also able to sit in and participate in outpatient counseling sessions with the dietitian. I enjoyed being able to be a part of the counseling sessions as I was able to use the clinical information I gained during my clinical rotations and apply it during conversation with clients. Lastly, I also saw how wellness information is marketed in corporate businesses. During February, I helped the dietitian and health coach set up blood pressure tables around different Vanguard buildings and marketed their health network while also taking blood pressure and providing education to employees.

Something that I am highly interested in doing in my future as a dietitian is opening up my own private practice. During my time working with a private practice dietitian, I was able to learn some of the ins-and-outs of running a business. I learned how to apply for contracts with insurance companies, how to bill for counseling sessions using insurance, how to submit claims, how to call insurance companies for client coverage, and how to stay organized. This information was so resourceful as it showed me a lot of what it takes to run private practice and business.

An exciting event I was able to participate in was a bone broth demonstration at a local grocery store in Ambler called, Weaver’s Way Co-op. The store provides all local and organic produce, with a ton of gluten-free and non-GMO products. It was exciting to be a part of this demonstration and provide the public with healthy nutrition knowledge! I was able to make educational handouts and provide a sample of cookies made form bone-broth protein powder. The past few weeks in my wellness concentration have been so rewarding and I am excited to continue learning and growing in this field.
