Hi there, my name is Gigi and I am a Sodexo Dietetic Intern at the New York Campus. For my concentration rotation, I chose to focus on Wellness however I really worked with my campus advisors to customize my own pathway. For my Wellness rotation I worked on nutrition communication through the mass media by having the opportunity to intern with a nutrition editor at a major magazine in addition to working with Sodexo’s national wellness coordinator for college campuses. Much of this work was done remotely which encouraged me to really strengthen my time management skills.

When working remotely, much of the day was mine to work freely (I did occasionally have webinars to sit in on, or progress calls) it was my responsibility however to make sure all given tasks were completed in a timely fashion. While interning for the nutrition editor, some of the projects she gave me were time sensitive, others she encouraged I take my time with and be extra thorough. The first thought many people had when I said, “I’m working from home” was that that I would get to sleep in and enjoy lazy mornings. However, this was far from the case.

Within the first week of working from home, I realized that I had to schedule and plan my day as if I was preparing to go to my job or on-site rotation. I set my alarms bright and early, got up and made breakfast and even got dressed. Starting my day like any other really helped my productivity. I gave myself a one-hour lunch break and spent much of my day doing work. The benefit of working from home was that it was up to my own discretion when I could be done for the day! This was definitely beneficial if I had other work to do or an errand to run.

Time management is a very crucial skill to have as an intern as we have many assignments and not always enough time. Time management will be such an important skill for us future dietitians to hone in on as it is necessary, whether in a clinical or outpatient counseling session, or just balancing work and personal life.

Once I found my routine, working remotely was a great experience and I learned so much from my preceptors in communicating nutrition information to the mass media. I look forward to continuing to grow my career in this aspect of nutrition once I complete my dietetic internship!
