Before I began my internship with Sodexo Dietetic Internships, I had moved to a new area of Minneapolis called Uptown. I was getting situated in my new surroundings and noticed on my way to my management rotation every morning, that there was a giant green building that stood out in a rougher part of town. After about a week of driving past it twice a day, I decided to stop in and was pleased to find Good Grocer.

Kurt Vickman founded Good Grocer in 2015,  and the volunteer based model is something to be admired. Kurt had previously run a food shelf not too far from Good Grocer is this lower income neighborhood and when handing out food, many people wanted to give what they could for it or always ask if they could work at the food shelf for the groceries. Because that was not allowed, Kurt came up with this idea. Good Grocer is a volunteer based business, which allows the community to become a member of the grocery by volunteering three hours per month, and in return receive 25% off the already low food prices. This policy gives low-income families in the area a way to give back to the community,  and provide and receive affordable food. The discount-pricing model for the Good Grocer is giving many of the people in this community a sense of pride while also reducing the need for free food to fill the gap. For more information on Good Grocer, below I attached two links.
