My name is Eileen Kugler and I am a reaching out to you from Region 12 out here in California. I am very excited to share that I recently finished up my clinical rotation at a local hospital in San Jose! While many interns had their rotations cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic, my Clinical Nutrition Manager encouraged me to stay and finish out the rotation. I could not be happier or more thankful for being provided this opportunity!
Following the pandemic through the eyes of a healthcare employee was very enlightening and showed me how important the interdisciplinary team truly is for patient care. During the last few weeks of my rotation I was given the opportunity to assess multiple patients with COVID-19. Many of the patients required enteral and/or parental nutrition and the nutrition team was always there, ready to provide recommendations. Following the progress of the virus and the patient’s recovery was an experience that I will remember and continue to value throughout my future career as a dietitian.

At the start of the internship, I was extremely nervous for the clinical rotation. My interest has always been in community and I made sure that all of my experiences reflected that. As my clinical rotation drew closer, I reached out to the dietitian at a local long-term care facility with the hope of completing the LTC rotation. Not only did I complete the rotation, but I left with a wealth of knowledge that made me more confident to take on my clinical rotation. By the end of my basic clinical rotation I felt confident assessing patients on my own and my initial nerves about the rotation had vanished. By the end of my time at the hospital, it’s safe to say I was starting to love clinical nutrition.
Since finishing up my clinical rotation, I have begun exploring the many opportunities Sodexo has provided for us to complete the internship remotely while the country is still in the process of reopening. The ability to continue the internship during the pandemic demonstrates the flexibility Sodexo has to offer as a distance internship. This flexibility is what initially drew me to the internship, and I will be testing it to its fullest as my husband and I move to across the country in the next few weeks.
I am very proud to be able to call myself a Sodexo dietetic intern and can’t wait to see what opportunities it brings me in my new home!
