Hi everyone! It’s Brooke Lantier and I’m back to share with you an amazing wellness experience that I recently had. I’m currently completing a two-week wellness rotation at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey. I’ve been working along side Kerri, one of several wellness dietitians at NBI. So, let me take you through my day!
Newark Beth Israel, along side several other RWJBarnabas Health hospitals compete in an employee weight loss challenge, it’s called “The Beth Challenge” at NBI. This was the first week of the challenge so things were a little chaotic in the morning. Kerri and I juggled the weigh-in sheets, updated the excel sheets, weighed all of the participants and gave weight loss advice! By the end of the week we had close to 120 employees participating in the challenge.
During lunchtime, we headed over to NBI’s Community Health and Wellness Center to teach a “20 Minute Meals” cooking class. All of the events at the wellness center are open to public, some classes include healthy cooking for kids, cooking with cancer fighting foods and building a better breakfast. For our 20-minute meal, we made a red lentil pasta with a carrot top pesto and a salad. Many of the ingredients used came from the hospital’s greenhouse and local farmers market. The greenhouse was amazing. We picked fresh baby spinach, basil and tomatoes to include in our salad. Then we walked over to the farmer’s market and pick up some apples, carrots and red onion. It was the freshest meal I have ever had! The members of the class absolutely loved how simple and healthy this meal was, not to mention super tasty as well!
My day finished with assisting Kerri with client meetings. The goal of these meetings is to help clients identify where they struggle with weight loss for example. We discuss eating habits, particular foods they may indulge in too much, ways we can improve healthy eating and exercise and building confidence within the client!
At the end of the day, I not only helped improve the lives of many people but also had a total blast doing it! I hope you enjoyed hearing about my day as a wellness dietetic intern as much as I did living it!
