Hello everyone!

My name is Anna Ng and I am the current Sodexo dietetic intern at New York Presbyterian Queens. From the two weeks I have been here, I have already learned so much more than I imagined - from new nutrition screening procedures to valuable life lessons. My preceptor shared a bit of advice that she learned from her internship and told me, “Food is the [only] thing patients can control.” As I prepared to begin my Patient Services rotation, this powerful statement kept replaying in my head.

I have been working closely with the dietary hosts, who are responsible for taking patient orders and delivering meals. I was super impressed by their knowledge of diets and level of compassion and courtesy for patients. Reflecting back on my preceptor’s advice, I began to realize why the hosts were so friendly and accommodating. Many patients have little control over the clinical procedures during their stay but have total control of what they can eat (for the most part). Because the dietary department is responsible for this one factor, they take food very seriously.

I had the privilege to take part in patient care and conducted tray assessments to ensure that meals were of the highest quality possible. One of the trays was assigned a Level 3 Dysphagia diet with nectar-like consistency, and I invited a patient’s family member to taste the meal - he actually enjoyed the food but was not very fond of the Thick N’ Easy beverages! According to my calculations, New York Presbyterian Queens makes the grade for Satisfactory.

Working in an environment where everyone shares such a strong commitment to patient care, I feel right at home. I could not be more excited to be interning at New York Presbyterian Queens and look forward to beginning my Basic Clinical rotation!
