Hello! My name is Anamarie Villagomez and I am a region 10 dietetic intern based in Austin, Tx. I am also a student at the University of Rhode Island earning a Master’s degree in Dietetics. I have enjoyed the combined program because fundamentally what I learn in the courses I take straight away with me into application amidst rotations.

I pursued the Sodexo Dietetic Internship due to its emphasis on an individualized approach. Sodexo is focused on providing exceptional internship experience while also investing in long-term goal achievements for the interns. In my personal statement, I touched on my long-term goal of wanting to become an International Board Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) after RD accreditation. Little did I know I would be starting that journey while in the internship when I picked the leadership concentration!

I am in awe of how quickly this experience is flying by. I am currently in my clinical rotation and have learned so much with the support of my preceptors. Every day I am challenged (in the best way) to dig deeper, ask questions, and think critically in order to provide the best nutrition care for patients! At times, I can feel like a fish out of water, but I let that be a reminder that I am right where I need to be. It is a reminder that I am pushing the boundaries on my skill set and above all refining and developing my clinical judgment capabilities. Once one daunting case or task is achieved, it becomes a second nature skill in my clinical assessment practice.

My favorite moments of clinical so far have been providing educations! I have given nutrition educations for patients with conditions such as Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), Diabetes, and Renal Disease. The most rewarding education has been with oncology patients since symptoms such as a change in appetite and taste often occur due to chemotherapy treatment.
I find educations to be a sincere time to connect with the patient and truly develop personalized nutrition intervention strategies.

A distance program may sound a bit isolating, but I assure you it is far from that. The interns in region 10 often reach out to each other to ask questions or touch base now and then to speak about experiences. In the master’s program, group discussions are encouraged, and group projects connect you with interns on the other side of the country who are just as willing to offer support! It’s a pen pal to the highest degree!

Sodexo creates community, provides individualized rotations, and invests in the success of the interns to reach monumental achievements. It is a privilege to be growing in the dietetics profession with the Sodexo Dietetic Internship!
