My name is Amarah Khan, and I am an intern in the Allentown campus. I started my internship in September in a long-term setting. From the very first week, I could see my learning curve going up. I got the opportunity to see various patients and get exposed to intense charting. It was also the first time I got to see patients in a long term setting and started appreciating the key aspects one needs to focus on in such an environment.

During my first few months, I also got to work with couple of corporate dietitians and covered a few corporate events with them. It was very interesting to see that aspect of nutrition and how dietitians work and interact in a corporate setting. In addition to this, I also got to spend time with WIC (Women, Infant, and Children) and provided nutrition counseling to low income families.

I am currently completing my MNT concentration at Capital Health in New Jersey. The last few weeks have been amazing from a learning standpoint. I have been exposed to several enteral/parenteral calculations/charting and find it to be extremely interesting! Also, this requires interaction with doctors, nurses, and pharmacists (who need to make the solutions). This makes me feel like a very important member of the hospital team. After the various experiences I’ve had in my last few months of internship, I find this acute care setting and the enteral/parenteral calculations to be my calling! I would love to work here after completing my internship.

One of the key things that has made my experience a very fruitful one is the one on one interaction with the preceptors. I have been very lucky to work with several very well experienced dietitians and have learned a lot from them. They have been my friends, preceptors, and mentors in this internship, and that is something I will always cherish!
