Hey everyone! My name is Alex and I am an intern with the Philadelphia campus and I am currently interning at Doylestown Hospital. I just recently completed my basic clinical rotation and am currently in my intermediate clinical rotation. I had some background in food service before the internship, but I never had any clinical experience, so you could say I was a little nervous. The biggest thing I have learned so far is to not be afraid to ask a lot of questions. I have a great preceptor and the other dietitians on the staff are amazing too. They are always there to help when I need it. I would have to say that one of my favorite parts about working in clinical is providing patients with nutrition education. During my basic clinical rotation, I provided a lot of diabetes, heart failure, and stroke nutrition education to patients. At first, I didn’t feel confident that I knew enough to educate these patients, but the more I did these educations the easier they were and the more confident I became. For me, I really love the patient interaction because it just shows you how important diet can become in a person’s life by helping them live a healthier lifestyle. It’s also really exciting when you can answer a patient’s question(s) about the diet they are on and help them understand what they will be doing at home.
Above is a picture of me participating in the employee health fair at Doylestown Hospital. I represented the inpatient RD’s and our table had butternut squash soup, cinnamon yogurt dip with local apples, and hot apple cider samples! We also provided healthy lifestyle tips and ways to use various fall vegetables.
If you are a future intern reading this (I know I read these blogs to get an idea of what this internship consists of) I just want to reassure you that this internship isn’t as scary as you think it’s going to be! On the first day walking into clinical rotation, my heart was racing, but your preceptor and other staff are there to help you! They know that you are an intern and probably don’t have a lot of experience. They don’t expect you to know everything in the beginning. You got this!
Good luck with everything, you’re all going to do great!
