Hi everyone! My name is Alexandra Gumen. I am a dietetic intern at the Philadelphia campus. My journey as dietetic intern started on February 1st, 2016. I completed my clinical rotation at Doylestown Hospital. Currently I am in my food service rotation at the Morris View Healthcare Center located in Morristown, NJ. This facility has around 300 long-term care residents. Food service management at this site is not only responsible for providing meals for the residents but also involved with meal production for Juvenile Detention center, shelter, Meals on Wheels program, Head Starts program, and adult day care center that is located on the property. On a daily basis, our kitchen produces around 3000 meals on average. I could not be happier to work with food service management at this facility and learn how to be a successful team player at such a massive production site.
Geriatric care in long-term care facilities has been my main interest since I decided to pursue a carrier in dietetics. Before I was accepted to the dietetic internship program I worked at the long-term care facility as a nutrition assistant. When I started my internship, I decided to go with the senior living concentration to continue my learning in this area. Nutrition therapy is a very important part in the elderly population that directly affects quality of life. The elderly population is at higher risk for malnutrition due to changes in energy intake and expenditure, functional status, bone mass, and immune function. Registered Dietitians play a crucial role in geriatric care by providing nutritional therapy to prevent and treat malnutrition. Older populations require careful nutritional approaches that consider chronic illness, depression, medication and social isolation. Nutrition supplements and/or enteral feedings are widely used in elderly patients who are at high risk for malnutrition.
My senior living concentration rotation is scheduled to start in August. I am looking forward to offering my knowledge and hospitality to the geriatric population and will hopefully make positive changes in their lives.
