Hello, all! My name is Lauren Walker and I am part of the Sodexo Philadelphia Dietetic internship. I completed my clinical rotation at Doylestown Hospital, where I am also currently completing my food service management. My concentration is wellness, and I was able to complete my hours at a variety of sites such as Shoprite, wellness centers, and a non-profit organization.

One of the most exciting parts of my concentration was working with Unite for HER, a non-profit organization that provides complimentary therapies for women with breast cancer in the Philadelphia area. I had the opportunity to work with the amazing women within the organization, as well as meeting the incredibly strong women they serve. I got to work closely with Erin, a dietitian who has a very interesting and rewarding job! The women have the opportunity to have a grocery shopping tour and personal cooking session with the dietitian. I got to go with her to meet one of the women at her grocery store of choice. We toured the store, shopping for healthy items to use for our cooking later on, as well as using the tour as an opportunity for nutrition education. Then, we went back to the woman’s house and cooked FIVE different healthy recipes together. What a cool experience!

I also got to observe nutrition seminars at Unite for HER wellness events, which were focused on the importance of plant foods and their healthful properties while going through cancer treatment. I had my own booth at one of the wellness events where I discussed gut health and sampled kombucha with the women. Lastly, Erin and I did a Facebook live together where we gave a tutorial on how to make a healthy BBQ sauce using dates, fresh herbs, and coconut aminos! Working with Unite for HER will always be a memorable part of my dietetic internship because it inspired me to increase my knowledge about antioxidants and how they affect the body in a positive way. It also reminded me how much I love getting creative in the kitchen! What inspires you as a dietitian?
