Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
Hello! My name is Katlynn Ferreira; I am a New Bedford campus intern concentrating in Wellness. I am just over a month into my internship and can already appreciate how dietetics participates in interdisciplinary teamwork. Earlier this month, I had to the chance to present to first-year biology majors at Emmanuel College in Boston as part of a guest lecture series. My purpose was to represent nutrition as a possible career path for them, focusing on the critical relationship between nutrition and biology. I emphasized how human biology can be impacted by nutrition, specifically maintaining good health can improve energy, function, and overall wellbeing and reduce risk of disease. Reflecting back, I realize whichever path they take within healthcare, nutrition will likely be a part of their work and biology will forever be a part of mine.

During my patient services rotation at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford I was able to attend an accountability meeting. Managers from each discipline gather weekly to discuss what is happening within their department in regards to patient satisfaction. They address concerns, offer one another solutions, and celebrate positive feedback from patients and visitors. This was a glimpse at how each area of the facility comes together to meet a common goal.

Now, in basic clinical, I witness the hands-on work of each discipline impacting the lives of patients. I appreciate the documentation from nurses, physicians, pharmacists, speech language pathologists, etc. to help me develop a plan for a patient. I also recognize the significance of collaborating with other disciplines to implement nutrition intervention. We all work in unison, similar to the intricate mechanisms within human biology functioning in harmony to maintain health and happiness!

I know I will continue to experience interdisciplinary teamwork throughout the internship and look forward to learning from everyone involved, because teamwork makes the dream work!
