Hey everyone, my name is Dyiamond Grant and I am Sodexo Dietetic Distance Intern from the Spring 2018 cohort. Most of you reading the blog posts are probably either (1) considering applying for the Sodexo Dietetic Internship or (2) already an intern curious about other experiences. Personally, prior to being accepted to the internship this blog was helpful in providing insight on what to expect and getting tips on how to navigate the internship; so, I hope this helps you!
Applying to a dietetic internship can be very intimidating and stressful, but it is all about choosing what is best for you and your needs. One of the main reasons I chose to apply to the Sodexo Dietetic Internship Program was because it allows you to explore more than 1 possible career path for nutrition and dietetics. I was unsure if I wanted to pursue a career in food service or clinical and was already set about not working in community nutrition. Well I am currently in my community rotation at Feeding Westchester and love it! I’ve been able to see my community from a different view and realize that there are more food desserts than are acknowledged. Being with an organization that is so passionate about ensuring healthy food is accessible, providing nutrition education, and ending hunger in our community has allowed me to connect with many people. It is a rewarding feeling to know that we can help others and introduce them to new information that they might have not had an interest in before.
I’ve learned that no day is the same when it comes to community nutrition. One day you may be presenting a nutrition education workshop to seniors at the YWCA, and the next you may be helping in the community garden. It’s refreshing to be able to get from behind the desk and interact with the community and hear their perspective. The internship is what you make it, so my advice would be to be open minded and commit yourself 110%!
