Hey y’all!  My name is Dionne Garner and I live in south Texas, where the heat is still on!  During the warmer months, it’s easy to get dehydrated.  We are having fun in the sun, maybe indulging in too many “other” beverages, and we forget to drink enough water.  I have been amazed at the number of people who come through my clinical site with dehydration.

Generally, if we drink water at each meal and before we are thirsty, we will get enough.  The key is to drink water throughout the day.  One easy way to monitor intake is to keep a reusable bottle with you at all times.  You can monitor how much water you’ve had and how much more you need to drink by keeping track of refills.  For a refreshing twist, try adding fresh fruit, mint, or cucumbers to your water.  Experiment with different combinations to see what you like best.

A popular summer activity in my small town is floating down the river in an inner-tube with a cooler full of beer in tow.  It’s important to remember, alcohol can be dehydrating, especially if you are in the heat of the sun.  We can still enjoy our favorite adult beverage; we just need to make sure we do so in moderation and drink plenty of water.

Our bodies are pretty good at letting us know when we need something and thirst is a strong indication we're running behind on fluid intake.  We just need to pay attention.

Enjoy your what’s left of the warmth and remember to stay hydrated!
