I have been learning so much these past few months as a Sodexo New York dietetic intern with the RD's at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. Every day is something different. Myself and the RD's at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center decided to educate those entering and exiting our hospital on Diabetes. We put together education, our game "Diabetes Myth Busters", cookbooks, and of course food/drink samples for those who came our way. There are many myths floating around in the world concerning diabetes and we wanted to clarify those. The following are a few fallacies believed by many:
• People with diabetes should not eat fruit.
• Obesity causes diabetes.
• Those with diabetes need special diabetic foods.
• If a person requires insulin, their diabetes is poorly controlled.
These beliefs are all false. Nearly 29 million Americans have diabetes and 1 in 4 are not aware they have it. Providing education and bringing clarity to the table is how we can make a difference as RD's to be.
