We are pleased to be able to offer an international experience of up to 280 internship hours at a Sodexo account in Canada, Europe or Australia.  Two options for this rotation are available:

OPTION 1:  You will have the opportunity to work in one of our facilities in the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Ireland, or Wales).  You will be placed in a Sodexo facility for 120 hours of food service management and will work with our National Dietitian for the UK on a special project for your concentration hours.   This project will be determined in advance with the Internship Director and National Dietitian.  Up to 6 interns a year can be accommodated for this option.

OPTION 2:  You may choose to complete your international experience in another country provided that:

  • There is an appropriate Sodexo location to complete the food service management competencies in that country
  • The location is safe according to US diplomatic standards for the intern to travel to and live in
  • Travel/Visa arrangements are feasible for a short stay in the country
  • Facility preceptors speak and read English
  • Communication between the Internship Director and preceptor is feasible and reasonable
     
 

CURRICULUM FOR THE INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE ( 280 hours total):

 

Food Service Management (120 Hours):  120 hours of the food service management rotation will be completed at a Sodexo healthcare facility in the United States and 120 hours at a Sodexo facility in the designated country.  Competencies and assignments to be accomplished at each facility are outlined on the food service management curriculum sheet approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of the American Dietetic Association.   

Concentration (160 Hours):  The intern will design an experience unique to his/her interests in the designated country.  This will give the intern an opportunity to explore an area of interest in the designated country, while furthering his/her knowledge and skills in the field of dietetics.  A proposal for this experience will be submitted to the Internship Director prior to beginning the international experience See Guidelines for Concentration Proposal for specific details regarding the three options available for interns completing the international experience.
 

 
     

  COSTS AND LIABILITIES 

In addition to all the costs and liabilities required for all interns in the Sodexo Distance Education Dietetic Internship, interns choosing the international experience option will be responsible for the following expenses, including, but not limited to:

  • Transportation—to, from and within the International Experience country.
  • Housing in the International Experience country.
  • All meals during the International Experience
  • Passports, visas and other paperwork required by the International Experience country.
  • Immunizations and/or health forms required by the International Experience country.
  • Medical and liability insurance coverage if additional coverage is required

In addition, interns participating in the international experience will be responsible for the safety of his/her own person and possessions during travel and stay in the designated country. Please see the General Information page for more details.
 

 
 

APPLICATION AND PLACEMENT

 
  1. Applicants to the Sodexo Distance Education Dietetic Internship who wish to complete an international experience will indicate this in a cover letter, and indicate what country or countries s/he is interested in.
  2. The Internship Director will contact the internship liaison, to assure that there is an appropriate placement in the applicant’s desired location.
  3. If there is no appropriate site in a requested country, the Internship Director will notify the applicant of this fact and discuss any other options.
  4. Once the applicant is matched to the internship, the Internship Director and intern will work together with the country’s contact person to set up the international experience.
