FIRST:
We were the second
dietetic internship in the country offered totally through distance education. Aside
from a week of orientation at the beginning of the program and one week of classes
during the program, the program is completed at Sodexo practice sites throughout the
country. We realize that many people are limited by family and work responsibilities
to certain geographic areas and we try to accommodate the preferences of our interns as
much as possible. Classroom activities and interactions take place primarily through
e-mail, the web site, and the chat room. Interns have many opportunities to share
their experiences as well as their work with each other.
SECOND:
Our philosophy is that we are training professional
leaders of the future. As such,
all our interns are treated as professionals throughout the program. Each Intern has
a great deal of input into the planning of his/her individual program and assumes a great
deal of responsibility in carrying it out. In this way, learning experiences can
meet the needs and interests of each of our interns and help
to develop leadership skills.
THIRD:
Even
though our interns are geographically separated from each other, we do a number
of things to make them feel that they are part of a community. During
orientation, we spend a great deal of time getting to know each other and
learning to work together. During the year, interns have e-mail contact
with other students, participate in weekly chat room classes, and work on
several projects collaboratively. Also, the password-protected
intern section of the site allows the interns to share news and photographs with
each other.
